Whether you’re hitching a trailer for the worksite or a boat for the lake, it’s imperative that you know your vehicle’s towing capacity.
To give Indianapolis, Avon, and Plainfield drivers a better idea of their vehicles’ capabilities, Andy Mohr Truck Center created this collection of guides for you to peruse.
How Towing Capacity is Measured
While most vehicles have the ability to tow, how much they can tow is completely dependent on many factors built into the truck’s design, such as:
- Axle ratio
Towing capacity is also very much dependent upon your vehicle’s Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). This is the maximum amount of weight your manufacturer has determined your truck can bear, including the weight of the passengers.
Another consideration is the Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR), which is the maximum amount of weight that can be placed on the front and rear axles. This includes the weight of the vehicle, passengers, trailer, and load.
Other Towing Capacity Considerations
Outside of your vehicle’s design, towing capacity is also very much dependent on your equipment and its weight capacity. For example, if your vehicle has a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds, but your trailer hitch only has a capacity of 3,500 pounds, you can only tow 3,500 pounds worth of weight.
We break down what kind of equipment you need to reach your truck’s maximum towing capacity safely in the guides on this page.
Why You Should Pay Attention to Towing Capacity
Heeding your manufacturer’s maximum towing capacity and not pushing its limits will improve the longevity of your vehicle. Doing so will also prevent hazardous driving conditions by ensuring your truck has the appropriate braking and traction control for the load it’s bearing.
